Welcome to the HLAA-WI website. We hope you’ll take time to look around and get to know us. You’ll learn who we are, what we stand for, and why we believe in this wonderful organization.
We are PEOPLE whose lives are affected by hearing loss; ours or someone else’s. We are people of all age groups, from different backgrounds. Many of us work full time jobs; some of us are retired. Some of us are parents of kids with hearing loss. We all believe that we must work together to help hard of hearing people live fuller, happier, more productive lives.
We believe it’s important to reach out to others who need information. We know that hearing loss is often misunderstood. Most of us will tell you that we have learned more from each other about living well with hearing loss than from anyone else, including those who are specialists in the field.
Many of us have been told that there is nothing that can be done to help us. We have proven that wrong many times over. We have benefitted from hearing aids, cochlear implants, BAHA implants, hearing loops, and myriad hearing assistive technologies that go beyond hearing aids. Many of us wonder why we were not told about these when our hearing loss was first diagnosed.
We come together to receive and offer support, and to share ideas and information. We advocate for laws, rules and services that make hearing loss, partial deafness in particular, an issue of concern.
We support ‘communication access’ through technology, and we support medical research that will someday eradicate deafness.
We encourage involvement in HLAA chapters, HLAA state associations and membership in the national HLAA organization. We believe that to reach out to others is the best way to achieve our goals.
We invite you to join us!
Your Decision to Do Something About Hearing Loss Begins HERE...
The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is the nation's foremost consumer organization representing the rights of people with hearing loss. HLAA-WI is Wisconsin's State Group.
HLAA has been providing information, education, support and advocacy since 1979 to enable people with hearing loss to live full and productive lives.
HLAA works to end the stigma associated with hearing loss.
HLAA believes that hearing is a birthright, and encourages treatment and prevention. HLAA also supports research in medicine and technology in the field of deafness.
HLAA advocates for your rights. HLAA represents you on corporate and government advisory boards, coalitions, educational institutions and non-profit organizations.
HLAA State and Chapter organizations are where people with all degrees of hearing loss meet regularly to share current and useful information, and to find ways to effect positive change at the grassroots level.
HLAA is a membership organization. When you become a member of HLAA you become a part of a national movement to make hearing loss an issue of national concern.

Meetings of HLAA are open to anyone interested in living well with hearing loss. You do not have to be an HLAA member to attend meetings.
Would you like to start a new chapter in Wisconsin? Contact Elizabeth.
Would you like to serve as a member of the HLAA-Wisconsin Board of Trustees?
Each year, there are 2-3 openings for 3 year terms on the Board. Terms begin at the annual meeting which is held each fall.
You may request an application form from the Nominating Committee if you are interested. Also, if you know someone else who would make a good Board member, please encourage them to apply. There are several off board committee positions available too.
Like most non-profit boards, the HLAA-WI Board consists of volunteers who do not receive pay for their services. Members serve because we believe in the mission of HLAA.
Contact Nominating Committee members: Lisa Zovar: lzovar@charter.net or Julie Olson: julieo@athenet.net for more information.
